Deconstruction of Films
Deconstruction is a critical theory that seeks to uncover the hidden or underlying meaning behind a media context. Film openings often establish key themes, characters and narrative arcs that will delay throughout the film. We can take the example of the opening scene of mission impossible 5 rouge nation:
The scene begins with a shot of Ethan Hunt struggling to hold on to the side of the airplane as it takes off into the sky. We see the plane climb higher and higher as Ethan still holds onto it. The camera cuts between a number of different angles including closeups of Ethan and wide shots of the plane. These shots convey the intensity of the situation as well as Hunt's determination.
Another way ot approach this scene is to focus on the use of special effects such as that of Luther (Ving Rhames) on top of a tower and Hunt holding onto a plane which shows an impressive feat and showcasing the artistry of the filmmakers and producers.
