Semiotics and Decoding Meaning
Semiotics:
Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and how they are used to convey meaning. Signs can be anything that stands for something else, such as words, images, sounds or gestures. The study of semiotics involves analysing how signs are used in different contexts, such as in advertising, film, literature, or cultural practices, to create meaning and influence how people interpret them.
Decoding:
Decoding meaning in semiotics involves analysing signs and symbols to understand their intended meaning and how they are interpreted by different audiences. By understanding how how signs and symbols are used ti convey meaning, individuals can gain insights into how meaning is constructed in different context, and how they can use this knowledge to make informed decisions about the messages they receive.
Ferdinand de Saussure:
Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) was Swiss linguist and semiotician who is regarded as one of the founders of modern linguistics and semiotics. He is known for his initial theories on the structure of language and the relationship between language and meaning.
One of his most important contribution to linguistics is the distinction he made between langue (language)and parole (speech). According to Saussure, langue refers to the abstract, underlying system of language that is shared by a community of. speakers. It includes the rules of and conventions that govern the use of language such as grammar, syntax and vocabulary.
Saussure also introduced the concept of sign which refers to the relationship between linguistic or non-linguistic element and the concept or meaning that it represents.
