Social groups and Social issues
Social groups are often portrayed in media through stereotype which are over simplified and generalised representations of a particular group based on limited or inaccurate assumption. These stereotypes can perpetuate negative attitude and beliefs about certain social groups and can contribute to discrimination.
For example women are portrayed as emotional, weak and irrational whereas men are shown as strong and rational. This general binary reinforces traditional gender roles and can limit opportunities to these individuals which do not abide to these norms. Similarly people of colour are shown as gang members, drug dealers or criminals perpetuating negative stereotypes and contributing to systemic racism and bias.
However media can be very powerful tool for challenging these stereotypes and promoting more accurate representation of these norms. It is important to for media creators and consumers to be aware of these representations and work towards more inclusive and accurate portrayals of these social groups.
